Sector Spotlight: Sprinkler Maintenance

As ongoing climate change, new AI data centers, and emerging grid-scale battery storage projects create new fire risks, investment in the global fire safety industry is trending up.

Sprinkler maintenance has become one of the fastest-growing and highest-earning niches in a historically slow-moving industry.

Here’s what private market dealmakers need to know.

Opportunities in the Sprinkler Maintenance Space

Sprinkler maintenance accounts for just 2.4% of the fire safety industry, making it the smallest sector in the space. The vast majority of sprinkler maintenance companies are privately owned. There are currently around 60,000 sprinkler maintenance businesses that are ripe for acquisition.

Sprinkler maintenance is the standout sector in the private sphere. Though it’s the smallest segment in the fire safety industry by company count, it leads in average revenue and average annual growth. The global fire sprinkler market is projected to reach $27.2B by 2032, according to the International Fire Suppression Alliance, as governments and insurers around the world tighten fire safety requirements.

The US National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requires sprinkler systems to be inspected, tested, and maintained on a set schedule, and insurers are increasingly conditioning coverage on proof of that maintenance. Private sprinkler maintenance companies also tend to run larger crews than the industry average, since the work requires licensed fitters rather than general laborers.

In England, updated regulations require sprinklers in new blocks of flats with a top floor starting at 11 meters above ground level, and in all new care homes regardless of their height.

Dubai's fire code requires regular inspection and maintenance of every system already in place. Non-compliance can result in fines or a suspended occupancy permit. These kinds of standing service requirements turn one-time installation jobs into recurring maintenance contracts.
