Artemis Origination is a global buy-side M&A origination advisory firm that supports strategic acquirers, private equity firms, and their portfolio companies in driving inorganic growth through acquisitions of platforms and add-ons.
Headquartered in London, Artemis focuses on the knowledge economy, identifying off-market opportunities and accelerating buy-and-build strategies. The firm's multilingual team is 100% dedicated to creating smart, proprietary deals for investors and corporates.
Marin Tadić, an M&A Associate at Artemis Origination, plays a key role in deal sourcing and target identification. Tadić builds high-quality acquisition pipelines and manages early-stage engagements in multiple regions.
Every dealmaker grapples with navigating fragmented and opaque markets. This is no different for the Artemis team.
“One of the main challenges in our work is achieving strong coverage, especially in fragmented or less transparent markets where relevant companies are hard to identify," Tadić said.
Grata has become a core tool for addressing this problem.
“Grata helps streamline the identification process, which allows us to operate more efficiently,” Tadić shared.
Since implementing Grata, the Artemis team spends more time on high-value work, such as assessing strategic fit and engaging directly with company owners. Artemis uses Grata to build and manage deal pipelines at scale, reaching comprehensive coverage even in less transparent sectors.
Today, Grata is an “essential” part of Artemis Origination’s workflow.
For Tadić, Grata stands out across the board – from data coverage to workflow simplification. That’s why Artemis kicks off the target list building process in Grata.
“The level of insights Grata provides into private companies is very strong. It consistently surfaces businesses that are difficult to find through more traditional tools,” he said.
Grata doesn’t just have great coverage. Tadić described the user interface as both intuitive and effective: “Grata makes it easy to iterate quickly and refine searches without losing time.”
Over the years, Artemis has trialed other AI platforms and LLMs for deal sourcing without comparable success.
Tadić found that tools like ChatGPT and Claude tend to hallucinate, and other M&A software lacks the private company coverage that the firm needs.
“LLMs are less effective, for instance, in differentiating between a private company, a PE-backed company, or a VC-backed company. Or in grasping a company’s real purpose and state of maturity from the proposition set out through the buzzwords of its website,” Tadić said. “In isolation, these are far less effective than proper, purpose-built deal sourcing tools.”
On the other hand, Grata’s AI features were a major benefit for the Artemis team.
“Grata's AI actually understands what we’re looking for,” Tadić said. Combining Grata’s Agentic Search with the ability to further customize and tweak filters proved to be a powerful workstream for Artemis. Grata also gives users the ability to preset default filters and keywords for frequent searches, which has been a “lifesaver” for Tadić when he’s working on a specific mandate.
"When the goal is sourcing private, less obvious targets, Grata is more effective than other tools. We typically start building a target list in Grata before using other platforms,” Tadić added.
Ultimately, firms need M&A software that actually delivers results. Artemis has experienced success in using Grata across different types of client engagements.
One standout use case came during a complex search that Artemis facilitated for its client, Egis Group. Using Grata’s keyword search, geographical filters, and AI-powered Similar Search, Artemis isolated a handful of firms out of many thousands with high-level strategic fit, including Omnia Projects. “We needed the highest levels of coverage and accuracy to find the ideal match,” Tadić said. Egis Group announced its acquisition of Omnia Projects on April 25th, 2024.
Artemis recently leveraged Grata for a cross-border, infrastructure-focused project in the UK and US.
“We were supporting a broader strategic process involving a relatively niche segment of the market,” Tadić explained. “The challenge was to identify a set of high-quality targets within a fairly opaque landscape. Grata helped us structure that search and improve the coverage across the geography. Grata actually contributed to the shaping of the direction of the process and supporting the eventual transactional outcomes.”
Their client, Steer Group, has so far completed three transactions originated by Artemis.
“Compared to other tools, Grata offers excellent coverage and provides a better view of companies that traditional tools often overlook. It consistently delivers higher-quality opportunities for our clients," Tadić said.
“As a tool, the real value comes from how we use Grata and how we take it forward for our own analysis, outreach, and relationship building. It's really a combination of the platform and execution on our side that ultimately drives results,” Tadić said.
Great dealmakers can do even more with great tools. By streamlining workflows and surfacing actionable targets fast, Grata enables Artemis to work at scale and meet the nuanced needs of its clients. The result is a consistent flow of well-matched opportunities and a reputation for delivering results.
