Urban areas often experience heat islands: clusters of buildings, roads, and other infrastructure that absorb and re-emit heat, making daytime temperatures higher than in outlying areas. This directly increases electricity consumption and can even result in blackouts and power outages. Outdoor spaces like green roofs have been proven to reduce heat islands, decreasing the cooling load by 70% in buildings.  

Sustainable landscaping practices are gaining popularity across the board. From pollinator gardens and planting native species to water-saving technology and xeriscaping, demand for greener infrastructure also comes with a premium price tag. Studies show that buildings with green certifications (like LEED and Energy Star) often yield higher rents and sales.
